What is the difference between a color coat and painting over stucco?

A color coat is a Portland cement or acrylic stucco product with integral pigment, applied as the actual finish layer of the stucco system. Paint is applied on top of an already-finished surface. A color coat bonds into the porous stucco and becomes part of the system. Paint sits on the surface and requires repainting every 5-10 years. A color coat on sound stucco is a more durable long-term choice than painting.

Can you exactly match my existing stucco color?

Close but not always exact. Integral color stucco is mixed to a formula, and aged stucco fades over years of San Diego UV exposure in ways that are difficult to replicate exactly. On a full re-coat of all wall surfaces, color consistency is achievable. On a partial coat of one elevation, a slight color difference between new and weathered surfaces is possible, especially in the first few months before the new coat weathers to a similar tone.

How long does a new color finish coat last?

A properly applied Portland cement color coat on sound stucco typically lasts 15-25 years before it needs replacement. Coastal locations with direct salt air exposure and inland locations with high UV exposure will see shorter service lives on the lower end of that range. The two biggest factors in longevity are proper substrate preparation and allowing the coat to cure before it is exposed to rain.

Does a color coat application require a permit?

A color finish coat over existing stucco that does not disturb the substrate or lath generally does not require a permit in San Diego. If the scope includes patching, lath repair, or substrate work, permit requirements depend on the extent of the work and the jurisdiction.
